A cashback website is a site through which you visit online retailers - very often recognised retailers that you would visit normally. However, these retailers have online marketing budgets - and they often offer websites/companies a commission on all sales they can generate for them. Cashback websites simply share this commission with you!
So Boots, for example, might give a website publisher 10% of any money you spend with them as a ‘thank you’ for passing you and your custom their way. A cashback site would then give you 5% of that back.
What’s in it for everyone?
Well the merchant / retailer gets your business. In the case of small businesses / start up shops it’s a way to get themselves seen and drum up early business.
And the cashback website get the rest of the cut (the share of the commission they don’t give to you). And they’re happy to do this, cos it’s more of a commission than they’d get otherwise! They also hope you’ll return and shop through them again, earning them more commissions that again - they’ll share with you.
